Obituary for Robert Shannon Phillips

Robert Shannon Phillips
Obituary written and submitted by family:

November 01, 1946 - February 15, 2018
Robert Phillips, born in Florence, Alabama raised in San Diego, retired to Hemet, unexpectedly passed away February 15, 2018 in Moreno Valley, California. Robert is survived by the love of his life and wife of 50 years Sharon Lee Phillips, eldest daughter Melissa Phillips (married to David Westerhout), daughter Heather Vigil (married to Gabriel Vigil) and grandchildren McKayla Vigil, Lucas Vigil, Sierra Vigil and Arlie Phillips-Westerhout.

Robert was an avid collector of turn of the century brass front glass top biscuit displays, tins, general store memorabilia and much more. He was the creator of beautiful hand crafted wooden masterpieces of all types. Running through an antique store spider web or being covered in saw dust made him smile. Robert was an adventurer - whether it was taking the road less traveled, scouring the nation in search of antiques and beautiful scenery with Sharon by his side or spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was happiest when he was on the go and when he was surrounded by family and friends.

Robert was a kind, patient and loving husband and daddy. Whether he was building custom shelves, designing sandboxes, creating one of a kind blue Nabisco trucks from wood, stopping to enjoy ice-cream, sharing special moments, attending school recognition assemblies or just being with people he loved his big laugh and huge heart could always be felt. If you were lucky enough to experience his rich history filled stories of the antiques that he collected and the people who used them you know that his fun and often funny anecdotes always brought history to vivid reality.

Everyone who was blessed to know Robert or who had the good fortune to cross paths with him could sense his compassion, love for his wife and family, his passion and his humor. He will be so very missed by so many - leaving a huge hole in our hearts. If you saw him often you likely experienced his "go to" outfit - a favorite shirt and ball cap featuring the oh so perfect phrase that teased a smile and described this great man perfectly, "Grampy, the man, the myth, the legend." Our hero! We love you!
