John attended Rowland Elementary, Barranca Elementary, Sierra Vista Junior High, and South Hills High School, where he was a thespian with roles including the lead in The Crucible. He was also a dedicated Scout, earning the Arrow of Light and Eagle Scout with Troop 443.

He attended Cal State Fullerton from 1975-77 where he majored in Telecommunications, followed by graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University of Redlands 1981-83.

He spent over 30 years working in Pharmaceuticals and Quality Assurance where he was known for his dedication, mentorship, and kindness to his peers.

Community service and charitable giving were pillars of his character. He was a faithful member of Oak Springs Community Church for over two decades leading worship on Sundays and serving on the board of governance and as a Deacon, then Elder.

John loved being in the great outdoors, whether fishing or hiking, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had an affinity for flowers, art, sci-fi, and the bass guitar.

John was preceded in death by both his parents and Patricia, his wife of nearly 40 years, and is survived by daughters Stacy Unzicker and Jaime Baalbergen and grandsons Benny and Niko. He also leaves behind his uncle Bob Boies, and brothers Drew LaMascus and Steve LaMascus.            John will be remembered for his intelligence, enthusiasm, humor, wisdom, and authenticity.

Although I only knew Mr. La Mascus for the short time he visited Juneau for Stacy and my brother's wedding in 2017, I recall quite fondly how jovial and kind he was to myself and our family. One time at dinner, both him and Patricia impressed on me the significance of marrying into your spouse's family, saying something along the lines of, "you're not marrying JUST your spouse..." And although the time I interacted with them was brief, their daughter Stacy is one of the kindest and most beautiful souls I've ever known; a legacy of most significance.
