“Keep smiling, keep smiling.”

John J. Shields Jr., 83, of Winchester, California (CA), passed away Friday morning, April 25, 2025, in his home surrounded by loved ones.

John, a proud New Yorker born and raised, was a dedicated Vietnam veteran who served 26 years in the United States Air Force. His service took him around the world, visiting many countries-one of which was the Philippines, where he met the love of his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years and 5 months, Maria Shields, and their 8 children: Luna Evans (Killean Evans) of San Francisco, CA; John Shields (Valerie Shields); Kenneth Shields (Celena Shields) of Maricopa, Arizona; Durina Smitko (Paul Smitko) of Winchester, CA; Doris Belk (Chris Belk) of Union, South Carolina; Peggy Bardouski (Randall Bardouski) of Highland, CA; Tamarra-Ann Shields (Jaime Ceja) of Highland, CA; and Shannon Castillo (Gilbert Castillo) of Riverside, CA. John also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

John found the most joy in being surrounded by family and his loyal little dog, Tiny. He had a gift for making people laugh and was known for ending conversations with his favorite phrase: “Keep smiling, keep smiling.”

My first memory of John was dancing with it at my best friend’s wedding. Since then he and Maria have always welcomed me into the Shields family, and I will always be grateful for that. I’m thankful I was able to see him again last summer. Rest in peace and thank you for always being kind. I love you!

I believe the first time I met John may have been at the bowling alley in San Bernardino. I had started dating his daughter and didnt know what to expect from him. I found John was a warm and friendly man. He was always imparting wisdom of some type whenever I visited their home. Thank you for always welcoming me. Be blessed on your new journey.
