William “Bill” F. Magaro

March 28, 2023

William F. Magaro passed away on March 28, 2023 at the age of ninety-four, fulfilling his last wish to reunite in heaven with his “Babe”, Edwina Naomi. Born on July 7, 1928, Bill’s life really began when he drove Edwina home from a Dorsey High School football game, the first step in building what would become a 72-year long marriage. Building would, in fact, become the defining theme of Bill’s life. Alongside his brothers, he founded the furniture company Salem House, where he built wood furniture made to last that is still sought after today. Throughout his life, he built an impressive reputation as an avid and skilled golfer, playing regularly at Pauma Valley Golf Club. His memberships at Fox Hills Country Club and Bear Creek Golf Club provided friendship, community and sport throughout his life. It was common to see Bill sitting next to Edwina in the club dining room greeting everyone who came in; his charisma drew people to him and his sense of humor made him excellent company for lunch. Most meaningfully of all though, and with Edwina by his side, he built a family; three daughters that mirrored his own childhood as one of three brothers. Bill ultimately served as the family patriarch for three generations over his lifetime, hosting family Christmases at a Salem House table he had built himself, impressing his grandkids with stories and photos of his gymnastic feats, and passing on advice that often reflected his identity as an Italian-American, with a glass of red wine in one hand and Dean Martin playing in the background. Bill is survived by his three children, Mary (Fred), Gwen, and Jan; four grandchildren, William (Leslie), Lissa (Brian), Natalie (Nick) and Janelle (Zach); and nine great-grandchildren, Max, Bella, Romulus, Margot, Francesca, Anastaziya, Nicolina, Tate and Ames. A private memorial service for family and friends will be hosted by Bill’s granddaughter, Natalie, at her home.
